Research Apathy among Faculty Members at Saudi Universities in Light of Some Variables

Objective: This study aimed to diagnose the current state of research apathy among faculty members at Saudi universities in light of several selected variables (gender, academic discipline, academic rank, and age). Methodology: In order to render such a purpose, the descriptive survey method was employed, and a questionnaire was designed for data collection. A random sample of 316 faculty members from various Saudi universities was selected. Key Findings: The findings indicate a certain degree of hesitation in identifying the manifestations of research fatigue among the participants, alongside consensus regarding its underlying causes and possible mitigation strategies. Statistically significant differences were observed with respect to specialization, favoring the theoretical over the applied disciplines, and age, favoring the 25–40 and 51–60 age groups. In contrast, no statistically significant differences were detected for gender or academic rank. Conclusions: Despite the lack of consensus regarding the manifestations of research stagnation, its underlying causes persist. This underscores the need to strengthen the research environment in Saudi universities by fostering research partnerships, developing robust research regulations and policies, and offering a range of incentives that support the sustainability of faculty research activities. Recommendations: Continue enhancing the research environment in Saudi universities by providing diverse financial and academic incentives and strengthening policies that support the sustainability of faculty research.
الهدف: هدف هذا البحث إلى تشخيص واقع الفتور البحثي لدى أعضاء هيئة التدريس في الجامعات السعودية، في ضوء بعض المتغيرات (الجنس، التخصص، المرتبة العلمية، العمر). المنهجية: لتحقيق هدف البحث تم تطبيق المنهج الوصفي المسحي، وتصميم استبانة لجمع البيانات، واختيرت عينة عشوائية من أعضاء هيئة التدريس من مختلف الجامعات السعودية، بلغ حجمها 316 عضوًا. النتائج الرئيسة: وجود تردد في تحديد مظاهر حالة الفتور البحثي لدى أفراد العينة، رغم الموافقة على أسباب هذه الحالة ووجودها في الواقع الأكاديمي، وموافقة العينة على مقترحات الحد منها، ووجود فروق دالة في الاستجابة تعزى لمتغيّر التخصص (نظري – تطبيقي) لصالح التخصص (نظري) ومتغيّر العمر لصالح الفئة العمرية (25-40) والفئة (51- 60)، وعدم وجود فروق تعزى لمتغيري الجنس والمرتبة العلمية. الاستنتاج: رغم عدم الاتفاق على مظاهر حالة الفتور البحثي؛ إلّا أن أسبابها موجودة، الأمر الذي يستدعي تطوير بيئة البحث العلمي في الجامعات السعودية من خلال دعم الشراكات البحثية وتطوير اللوائح والسياسات البحثية وتقديم الحوافز المتنوعة التي يمكن أن تعزز استدامة النشاط البحثي لدى أعضاء هيئة التدريس. التوصيات: الاستمرار في تطوير بيئة البحث العلمي في الجامعات السعودية، خاصة ما يتعلّق بتقديم الحوافز المتنوعة (المادية والأكاديمية) وتطوير اللوائح والأنظمة ذات الصلة باستمرارية واستدامة النشاط البحثي للأستاذ الجامعي.
