Abstract
Breath tests have transformed the non-invasive diagnosis of gastrointestinal disorders. These tests utilize the fundamental idea that gases generated by bacterial metabolism, or enzymatic processes in the gastrointestinal system can be identified in exhaled breath, offering diagnostic insights into numerous clinical conditions. The clinical application of breath testing has significantly advanced, transitioning from basic qualitative evaluations to complex quantitative analyses that enhance contemporary gastroenterological therapy. The advancement of breath testing technologies has coincided with our comprehension of gastrointestinal physiology and bacteria. The current spectrum of tests for evaluating carbohydrate malabsorption, bacterial overgrowth, and intestinal transit has become essential to patient care. Their non-invasive characteristics, coupled with superior safety profiles and moderate costs, have established breath tests as primary diagnostic tools in numerous clinical situations. This review offers an updated insight on the utilization of breath tests in present day practice of gastroenterology.
