Abstract

Abstract

Background
It is crucial to identify the variables influencing the outcomes of COPD patients admitted to the respiratory intensive care unit (RICU).

Objective
The aim of our study was to describe the effect of time in the form of complaint duration, admission delay time, day of admission, time of admission, and length of stay on the outcome of COPD patients admitted to the RICU.

Patients and methods
This prospective descriptive study was conducted among COPD patients admitted to the respiratory ICU at the Assiut University Hospital. Cases who died, those who refused to participate in the study, and cases that were discharged or transferred from the ICU before completing data collection were excluded.

Results
A total of 149 patients were included in the study; 120 (80.5%) patients survived (survivors), whereas 29 (19.5%) patients deteriorated and died (non-survivors). We observed a significant statistical difference between the two groups (survivors and non-survivors) regarding complaint duration, admission delay time, day of admission, and length of stay in the ICU.

Conclusion
Time, in all of its various forms, significantly impacts the prognosis of critically ill COPD patients admitted to the respiratory intensive care unit.
