Abstract

The Bisham plant (Commiphora gileadensis) is one of the most popular traditional medicinal plants used in Yemen. The bark of the plant is useful to treat burns and skin infections. This study was aimed to investigate the antibacterial activity of the bark as extract and as pharmaceutical ointment, cream and gel against Staphylococcus aureus. The study was carried out using agar cup plate method. The results showed that antibacterial activity of C. gileadensis bark extract by maceration extract had a inhibition zone on S. aureus using 40% extract was 16.3 mm, at 60% extract it was 17.3 mm, while in 80% the inhibition zone was 18.7 mm, on the other hand, the using of soxhlet was showed a sensitivity zone 14.8 mm for 40% extract. 16.2 mm for 60% extract, and 17.7 mm for 80% extract. Formulation of 10% C. gileadensis bark methanolic extract as cream showed 13.3 mm inhibition zone and 15.7 mm for gel which showed greater antibacterial activity than the standard cterimide cream (13.3 mm inhibition zone). It turns out that the Bisham extract can be formulated efficiently as cream and gel pharmaceutical products.
