Abstract

Background
Cluster of differentiation 47 (CD47) is a transmembrane protein that is found on the surface of many cells in the body.

Aim
This study aimed to examine the effect of different storage temperatures on CD47 expression level on platelets and assessment of platelet quality, including platelet count and mean platelet volume (MPV), during storage.

Patients and methods
This was a prospective study conducted on 32 participants in the central blood bank, Clinical Pathology Department, Assiut University Hospital on platelet concentrate samples collected by two methods.

Results
According to CD47 expression level, there is a statistically difference between days 0 and 5 refrigerator storage, between days 0 and day 5 of shaker storage, and between day 5 of refrigerator and day 5 of shaker storage in random donor platelet and apheresis donor.
According to platelet count and MPV, there is no statistical difference between days 0 and 5 refrigerator storage, between days 0 and 5 shaker storage, and between day 5 refrigerator and day 5 shaker storage in random donor platelet and apheresis platelet.

Conclusion
Monitoring CD47 expression, platelet counts, and MPV in single donor and random platelets is crucial. CD47 changes and higher yields in apheresis products impact transfusion practices. Room temperature storage with agitation reduces CD47 loss, extending the shelf life of the platelet.
