Abstract

Background
Although chemokine receptor 4 (CXCR4) expression levels have been shown to influence the prognosis of neoplastic cells in a variety of cancer types, it is unclear how they relate to the prognosis and management of multiple myeloma (MM).

Aim
To analyze the predictive value of CXCR 4 and response to treatment in MM patients and determine its role as a prognostic biomarker.

Patients and methods
This prospective cohort study was conducted on 78 MM patients recruited from the Clinical Hematology Unit, Internal Medicine Department, Zagazig University Hospitals. CXCR4 expression was measured by ELISA in all cases.

Results
At cut off point 2600.5 with area under the curve 0.648, CXCR had a sensitivity 92% and specificity 13% in the prediction of good prognosis in the studied group with a positive predicted value of 88% and negative predicted value of 48%.

Conclusion
CXCR4 was a potential predictor of clinical outcome in patients with MM.
